This is the final installment of the Beautifying Foods Series - Foods for your Nails. If you missed the first two parts of the series, Beautifying Foods - Foods for your Skin and Beautifying Foods - Foods for your Hair, be sure to check them out! As mentioned in the first two posts in this series, the intention behind Beautifying Foods is to emphasis that all these external features (hair, skin and nails) are windows to how things are on the inside.
Today I am discussing foods that will help keep your nails healthy and strong. Did you know that nails only grow about 3.5 mm per month and this is considered rapid growth(1)! This means that it may take some time before you start noticing improvements in your nails, so come up with a plan of action and stick with it!
Nails are actually made out of a hard protein called Keratin (yup, the same protein that makes up our hair!). Since nails are also made up of keratin, protein is a key nutrient to keeping your nails nice and strong. Other nutrients needed are healthy fats (surprise, surprise), biotin, zinc and selenium. As you may have noticed many of the nutrients for hair and skin health are also ones that nourish our nails. This is because a well balanced diet that includes a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds, healthy fats, beans and legumes, lean protein sources contain so many of the essential nutrients that keep hair, skin and nails strong and looking beautiful!
Similar to how protein is needed to build keratin that makes up our hair, it is also need for the nails as they are also made up of keratin.
Zinc is another key nutrient needed for nail health as it helps in the growth of new cells, especially those that growth rapidly.
Biotin, another nutrient needed for hair as well works to keep the nails strong.
As you may have noticed the types of foods that allow your hair, skin and nails to look its best are also the foods that nourish your body. There is no one magical food that will give you healthy looking hair, skin or nails; rather a healthy diet with a variety of foods!
